The title of this article could really be interpreted in two ways. The first is quite simply – what does this term ‘the cloud’ actually mean? It’s a buzz word we hear a lot about, and it’s one that we may not have questioned.

Meanwhile, if you already know the answer to this previous question, then you might be wandering quite simple – what does the cloud mean. In other words what does this mean for the progression of technology? And for existing online businesses? Here we will answer both those questions.

What Does the Cloud Mean?

Essentially ‘the cloud’ refers to an abstract collective storage space that exists online. If something is on the cloud, then this means that it is a file with no physical location. Casually we might then simply use the cloud to refer to anything that isn’t on our computer – such as the internet – which instead exists on lots of servers around the world. If you were going to back up your data using online backup services, then this data would be stored on one, or on several servers. Again then you might say you’ve uploaded the files to ‘the cloud’.

More specifically the cloud tends to refer to those files that don’t have any set location – even among servers. These then are files not stored on a single server, but several mirrors. ‘Cloud hosting’ for instance would mean that your website existed on many servers at once, allowing for them to share the bandwidth, and meaning the site will rarely completely go ‘down’ as there will always be at least one server still working.

What Does This Mean?

The reason the cloud is being talked about more and more is because the technology to support this kind of technology is improving. The internet could be seen as existing on the cloud, and that’s always been around, but this is still just a group of pages that load up on the computer.

Cloud computing basically means ‘outsourcing’ computing power, storage and more. And because the speed of internet connections is always increasing, this is more and more possible meaning that less and less actually has to run on your computer at all.

A simple example is Apple’s iCloud – which allows you to upload your files onto their servers and then stream music, videos and pictures from there. This basically means that you don’t need to save anything on the devices themselves – meaning in turn that you don’t use up harddrive space. As this becomes more and more common we might eventually see computers fall dramatically in price, and dramatically in weight and size. They won’t need hard drives you see, because they will be ‘always connected’ and they will stream everything from the cloud.

And when internet connections speed up even more, and servers become more powerful, those devices might not even need to have powerful processors. The reason being that they will be able to outsource that too – and play games and run software directly from the web as ‘web apps’ thus doing away with any need for downloading. Imagine an ‘app store’ where every app can be accessed immediately  – where you pay per use rather than for ‘ownership’ of that software. It literally could change everything, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
